An urgent message to all members and parlors of the Native Sons of the Golden West…..
Our Grand President James P. King has been stricken by a rare disease known as Guillain–Barré syndrome. While performing his official duties as Grand President, James collapsed from the loss of his legs while attending a crab feed dinner in Ione, California. He was taken to a local hospital and eventually transferred to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center where he underwent extensive examinations, treatment and testing until his condition was finally diagnosed to be Guillain–Barré syndrome. The disease causes your immune system to attack your nerves, leading to muscle weakness and even paralysis. The exact cause of Guillain-Barré is unknown, but it often occurs after a viral or bacterial infection. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any age. There’s no cure for Guillain-Barré, but most people eventually make a full recovery. Recovery can be slow, lasting anywhere from several weeks to several years.
In spite of the fact James is hospitalized and without the use of his extremities, he continues to perform his duties as Grand President with the same passion he has applied while being a Grand Officer. He is fulfilling his obligations to the order, directing the Board of Grand Officers, coordinating Grand Officer meetings, scheduling dedications, organizing initiations and was recently appointed to the Hall Association Board of Directors.
For over 11 years, James has devoted himself to the Native Sons of the Golden West. Now is the time we can show our appreciation and thank him for his diligent, determined and tireless work in the order. He has made the NSGW a better order for all of us, and has fully followed our strong virtues and principles. James will need a lot of time, medical care and support from his friends as his costs are expected to be significant.
The Grand Parlor Board of Grand Officers is asking for your help in assisting James on his road to recovery. We have established a Go Fund Me page to help him raise much needed funds from his family, friends, fellow NSGW members and NSGW parlors. Whatever amount you can afford will go to James to aid his speedy recovery from this devastating illness. James needs your support today. Now is the time for all of us to show our friendship, loyalty and charity towards the Grand President of our order. On behalf of the Grand Parlor Board of Grand Officers, we thank you tremendously and are sincerely grateful for your tax-deductible donation. We should all be honored to be part of the generous and caring fraternal order of the Native Sons of the Golden West.
